Art Foundations - Grade 8
Full Year, Everyday, 1 High School Credit
Art Foundations is an advanced art course offered in eighth grade. Art Foundations builds on the skills and concepts developed in Art 7. Art Foundations is a prerequisite to Studio 1 in high school and the first class in an art sequence culminating with AP Art in 12th grade.
Students will create artwork in a variety of mediums both two and three-dimensional. Composition is heavily emphasized in all projects. Art History will be incorporated into many projects. Peer and self reflection in both written and verbal form are essential components of the course. In addition, students will be encouraged to express their own thoughts and ideas through their artwork.
Major Units of Study include:
- Design: Elements & Principles of Design, Color Theory, Logos
- Observational Drawing: Contour Line, Value Drawing, Shading Techniques, Pencil, Charcoal, Color Pastels, Portraits, Still-Life
- Painting: Watercolor, Tempera, Acrylic, Color Mixing & Theory, Landscape, Abstraction
- Printmaking: Relief Prints
- Sculpture: Clay, Assemblage
- Collage & Mixed-Media
